The paper discusses the results of contact angle measurements
undertaken on insulating material samples
with artificial pollution layers of different thicknesses,
which were applied on insulating material samples with
various degrees of roughness. The influence of the
roughness of clean surfaces on the hydrophobicity has
also been investigated by contact angle measurements.
It was found that the roughness is an important parameter
for the degree of hydrophobicity as well as for the
hydrophobicity transfer property of insulating materials.
Therefore, the roughness has to be taken into account if
insulating materials shall be compared to each other.
