In most cases damage occurs in the structure and cannot be visually detected from the outside, which is the reason why appropriate non-destructive inspection (NDI) methods have to be developed and applied. These methods should also allow a first damage evaluation by means of "effects of defects". That is the reason why in this work a new NDI-System is introduced which is based on an optically excited Lock-In thermography system. After the damage detection, the influence on the reduction of the mechanical properties is evaluated using characteristic parameters. A CFRP plate containing different damage types and damage geometries is used for validation as well as complex, curved structures containing real defects.
