This study investigated, if sarcomas, tumors of mesenchymal tissue with poor prognosis, express heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) on their cell surface. Therefore Hsp70, an in healthy cells intracellulary occuring protein, which fullfills cytoprotective functions, has been analysed with immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry after extracting cells from primary tissue.
It points to evidence that malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin express Hsp70 on the cell surface in contrast to corresponding normal tissue. This opens new perspectives in diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of bone tumors. Using Hsp70-specific reagents like antibodies, tumorspecific Hsp70 membrane expression might help to visualize tumorlocation in the patient´s body. In addition, Hsp70 could be used as a target for antibody-buond chemo- or radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
