The radiofrequency ablation has been established as a safe and effective method of choice in the curative treatment of AV nodal reentrant tachycardia. Since few years, cryoablation for the treatment and therapy is used for arrhythmias as well.
In this largest randomized multicenter study 500 patients were included with documented AVNRT, distributed 1:1 in a cryo- and RF- group. Study hypothesis was that cryoablation is less likely to result in ablation caused complications such as high-grade AV block.
Focus of this study was primarily the review of the acute effectiveness of RF and cryoablation. Furthermore, the procedural parameters and the frequency of complications were compared.
The primary success of the procedures gave no significant difference. The duration of the electrophysiological examination was significantly longer in the cryo group. With regard to complications, there were no significant differences.
These results have led to the clinical practice, that at the German Heart Center Munich in AVNRT mostly radiofrequency ablations are performed, and the cryoenergy only in very exceptional cases is used.
