Despite differences in clinical presentation and prognosis of multiple myeloma (MM), and extramedullary spread of MM (eMM), extramedullary plasmocytoma (EMP) and MM/eMM are indistinguishable on morphological and cytogenetical grounds. Cancer-Testis-antigens (CT-antigens) represent an emerging group of antigens, commonly found in MM associated with poor clinical outcome. The study aimed to analyze the expression of five CT-antigens in patients with MGUS, MM, eMM and EMP. Besides marked differences in CT-antigen expression, the study showed a frequent expression of CT-antigens in EMP, though being a benign disease, and even demonstrated a similar spectrum of CT-antigen expression as MM and eMM.
Besides their diagnostic value in the differential of plasma-cell disorders, CT-antigens may indicate as prognostic markers in EMP and need further investigation.
