In this study, the morbidity of radical perineal prostatectomy and its influence on patient’s satisfaction was evaluated.
The perioperative mobidity was low.
The postoperative results showed at 19,3% of patients suffered from any kind of urinary incontinence. 16,4 % loose urine without the desire to void, 2,9 % reported about urge incontinence. The incontinence episodes in general were mild in most patients, with only 4% wearing more than 1 pad per 24 h.
Overall, 84,7% of patients was satisfied with their postoperative continence status.
Prior to the operation 80,3% had erections sufficient for sexual intercourse. Erectile function was preserved in 5,9% of patients. Keeping in mind that the operation was performed in a non-nerve sparing fashion, it is obvious the in about 6% the nerve for erectile function were spared by chance.
19,4% of patients suffering from erectile dysfunctions used erection aids; the auto erectile injection therapy was the preferred treatment (19,4%).
In total 29% of them were satisfied with their erectile function.
25,1% of patients reported of a change in defecation after surgery. Some patients suffered from mild forms of fecal incontinence.
