The present dissertation deals with the application of nitrile ligated transition metal complexes with weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) as mediators for the polymerization of isobutene, yielding highly reactive polyisobutenes. The focus is set on three different domains: a) the development of improved synthetic pathways for known and novel nitrile stablilized transition metal complexes bearing polyfluorinated tetraarylborates, b) the synthesis of low molecular weight WCA based model precursors which, after subsequent reaction with appropriate metal salts, could be used as easy analyzable test systems for the heterogenization of the mentioned complexes c) conducting mechanistic studies regarding the polymerization of isobutene.
