This empirical study examines the living space consumption of ten group housing projects created as new constructions. In the course of a survey, the current per capita living space of the ten projects as well as the change in the per capita living space of the residents compared to their previous flat was determined. Furthermore, the impact of the change on the subjective perception of the respondents was examined with regard to their changed living situation. In order to generate comparable results, a uniform living space calculation according to the German standard was carried out for all projects. Contrary to expectations, 75 % of respondents who joined the group housing project have increased their per capita living space. Even though 42 % of respondents reduce their individual per capita living space by moving into a group housing project, this share is reduced to 25 % as soon as the common areas are included into the calculation. The community area of cluster housing projects accounts for between 33 % and 37 %. On the contrary it is only 6 % to 22% of shared housing projects. Accordingly, the reduction in individual per capita living space is higher for cluster housing projects than for shared housing projects. In the considered projects, the substitution of the individual per capita living space by communal areas is not consistent, so that the consumption of living space has increased. This is also reflected in comparison to the urban average, where eight of ten projects have higher per capita living space. The two projects, which are below the urban average, are shared housing projects. The study on the subjective perception of the residents shows that moving into a group housing project has a positive effect on the quality of life, even if the per capita living space is reduced. At the same time, the privacy of the residents in both forms of housing is adequately protected.
