Restricted movement, impingement and dislocation are serious complications after total hip replacement. Range of motion until impingement and until dislocation as well as the maximum resisting moment against levering the femoral head out of the acetabular cup were determined by means of an especially developed testing device. Different asymmetric cup inserts were investigated in defined implant positions through movement combinations associated with dislocation. Because of different design characteristics clear differences regarding the range of motion and the stability against dislocation dependent on the implant position were recorded. Thereby, the so called constrained inserts showed very high resisting moments, but lead to clear movement restrictions.
