Cachexia is a multifactorial and multi-organ wasting syndrome which is highly prevalent in gastrointestinal tumor diseases and affects muscle and adipose tissue. Preadipocyte cell culture, blood analyses as well as gene expression measurements of liver, muscle, subcutaneous and omental adipose tissue revealed an altered preadipocyte differentiation capacity due to the presence of cancer and an increased activity of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in cachectic patients versus controls. Furthermore, plasma interleukin-6 was proven to be a promising survival marker.
