With the presented study it was possible to demonstrate that the pancreatic neuropathy influences the degree of myelination and glial activation in the pancreas. For this purpose, the qualities of intrapancreatic nerve fibers in tissue samples of healthy pancreas and of patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) or pancreatic cancer (PCa) were examined. Specifically, the amounts of the myelination marker NFH and of the glial activation markers GFAP and p75 were determined. Here we found that CP and the PCa are associated with a selective glial activation. In addition, in PCa the amount of hypomyelinized, probably pain conducting C-fibers was increased.
