In this study, 36 depressed inpatients und 24 healthy controls were examined for the therapeutic effects of a 40 hour sleep deprivation. The sleep EEG was continuously supervised by a portable system. The participants rated their mood and existential orientation every three hours on a visual analogue scale. The results confirmed: The effects of sleep deprivation grow, the more consequently sleep was avoided. There was an antidromic effect between the depressed and the healthy subjects concerning mood and fatigue: the healthy controls became more tired and their mood worsened. The depressed patients showed an increase on the mood scale and no variation on the fatigue scale. In both groups, sleep had a negative effect on mood. But in the depressive group, that was compensated through a long-term antidromic effect. In the control group, a high correlation between mood and fatigue was found, which was smaller in the patient group. This paper could not clarify the active antidepressant principle in sleep deprivation.
