In 1995 the Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA) carried out detailed examinations about pesticide drift. The latest specifications were published in the Federal Gazette. The new basic drift values were approximated using Cauchy-distribution [16], allowing the model which is designed to be used to estimate the drift-induced pesticide exposure on non-target areas. The resultant estimate depends on the amount of pesticides spread on the target field, the size of the target field, the length of the field border between the target and non-target field and the principal wind direction. Because of the complex casual relationship between pesticide exposure and its resultant effects, modeling pesticide drift requires a substantial simplification of the factors involved. The present model simulates a scenario where the pesticides are spread precisely up to the edge of the field, the wind strength is below five meters per second (5m/s) and temperature is less than 25 C° when the pesticides are applied. The model is also designed to calculate the entry of mineral fertilizer into non-target fields. This part of the model is based on the examinations of the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS). The pollution of the non-target area with mineral fertilizer depends on the length between the target and non-target field and the process chosen to spread the fertilizer. It is possible to choose between the following three processes: TS / EOS: Tramline spreading / Environment optimisation setting. TS / YOS: Tramline spreading / Yield optimisation setting. FS / YOS: Field edge spreading / Yield optimisation setting. Further, it is possible to calculate the area on the non-target field affected by the mineral fertilizer. The models to estimate the entry of pesticide and mineral fertilizer on non-target expanse are combined in the QuickTrift program. QuickTrift facilitates the collection of data and clearly depicts the results. Also, QuickTrift offers the export of data to Microsoft® Excel®. Through QuickTrift it was possible to demonstrate, that with the creation of ‘transborder- fields’ the entry of pesticides and mineral fertilizer into non-target fields can be considerably reduced.
