Inconsistency management is important and challenging in automated production system design (APSD), because consistency among interdisciplinary models from different stakeholders cannot always be maintained in different phases of APSD. Hence, (semi-)automated techniques assisting model developers to resolve arising inconsistencies are essential to increase system reliability and design efficiency. However, few efforts have been made on inconsistency resolution in APSD. This study proposes a novel research method to create and evaluate inconsistency resolution approaches. For a cross-domain general understanding of inconsistency resolution, basic elements and goals are formally defined. It also indicates to avoid negative side effects of inconsistency fixing actions and to take advantage of positive ones. Meanwhile in the explored solution space, a feature diagram is created to draw on mostly primary features of resolving inconsistencies, which allows approaches in different domains to be compared. As a result, based on the formalized problem and the feature diagram, a conceptual approach including action generation and planning is put forward.
