The object of this paper was to prove a stage shift in prostate carcinoma in patients that have undergone surgery in curative intention between 1997 and 2005 in Germany.
Age and PSA value at the time of diagnosis, TNM stage, grading and Gleason score of males after radical prostatectomy (n=6920) were compared. In our study the age of diagnosis remained stable at about 64 years. The median PSA decreased from 9,7 to 6,8 ng/ml and the percentage of locally advanced tumours declined from 42,8 to 29,5%. During the observed time period the number of patients with positive lymph nodes or undifferentiated tumours did not exhibit a trend. The magnitude of a Gleason score of 8 to 10 remained steady at an average of about 13,0%.
The international postulated tumour stage shift was verified in respect to PSA value at the time of diagnosis and tumour stage, but not to positive lymph nodes and tumour grade.
