An electrical drive was dimensioned for the steerable rear axle of a self-propelled forage harvester. After collecting field data, typical load spectra were calculated. These represent the test program during test bench examinations leading to a system comparison. Subsequently, the system efficiencies at specific working points and for complete working cycles were calculated. The electric system offers an advantage for both. Increasing installation space as well as decreasing power to weight ratio are disadvantageous. In addition, investment costs are increasing.
