The early diagnosis of skeletal lesions is of great importance to improve the palliative therapy of patients with prostate cancer and bone metastases. Aim of this work was it, to evaluate the diagnostic value of various bone parameters as well as the prostate specific antigen (PSA). There have been taken blood samples of 15 patients with prostate cancer, who took part in a multicenter phase III-therapy trial, at equal intervals to correlate the development of the bone markers to different clinical factors. The study showed, that levels of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and PSA correlate best to the clinical course of patients with prostate cancer and bone metastases. These results suggest, that serial measurement of PSA and BAP may be useful in monitoring the course of the disease and in the improvement of the therapeutic effect of treatment.
