DGF is still one of the most important impacts on short- and long-term outcome of cadaveric renal allografts. Ischemia reperfusion injury in the context of cold ischemia time and acute CNI nephrotoicity is a major factor in the development of DGF. Prostaglandin E1 shows multiple anti ischemic and tissue protective abilities. To evaluate an eventual positive effect on primary function of cadaveric renal allografts, a retrospective single-center study was designed at the surgical department of the university hospital rechts der Isar, Munich, Germany. A group of 100 Patients, who recieved an intravenous drug regimen consisting of PGE1 and high dose furosemide was compared to a control group. The results showed no significant improvement of renal functional parameters. In contrast, plasma levels of creatinine and urea were increased in the PGE1 group. Thus, the effectiveness of PGE1 in combination with high dose furosemide to diminish DGF could not be determined in this trial.
