In case of occlusion or subtotal stenosis of other blood supplying extracranial arteries, the external carotid artery (ECA)is a potential collateral artery, with relevant contribution to maintain the cerebral perfusion. Also because of biofluid-dynamic reasons the external carotid endarterectomy during routine carotid endarterectomy was demanded. Within the scope of a prospectiv trial the outcome of the ECA after it`s eversion-endarterectomy during routine carotid endarterectomy was evaluated. Due to the results the eversion-endarterectomy of the ECA can be recommended in the case of a preoperative high grade ECA-trunk stenosis. The results of our study match the results of other authors.
