The follow-up control of periimplant inflammation during the acute stage and during therapy is becoming increasingly important. Since the gold standard using histometrical evaluations, can not be used in the every-day office situation, alternative methods must be examined. This study was developed alongside of a new method for treating periimplantis by means of the CO2-laser. The periimplant attachment was measured by means of 60 Frialit 2 implants using beagles. The measurements were taken before and after treatment. Conventional as well as digital x-rays and clinical measurements werde taken at mesial and distal measuring points. At the buccal and lingual points only clinical measures could be taken. The corresponding measurements could be related to histological findings. The digital x-rays lead to an overexposure of the fine, newly developed posttherapeutic bonestructures, thus, the depth of the bonedefects was overestimated. Through the comparison of the conventional radiological measurements with the histometric results, the depth of the bone pockets could be correctly estimated. The clinical measurements were found to be similar to the histometric findings. The depth of the bone defects was underestimated when using only the clinical measurements. This is especially true for the buccal and lingual measurement points. In these areas the underestimation exceeds the number of correct measurements. The results of this study show that clinical measurements and conventional x-rays are both needed to check the progression of periimplantitis and the therapeutical success. The radiological control is still vital. Through the use of the x-rays the new, thin boe structures are most effectively shown.
