Intestinal Schistosomiasis, a common disease in large parts of the tropics, is evoked by the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. The most important course of disease in human hosts is a granulomatous inflammation with consecutive fibrosis. In order to test the influence of the macrophage-stimulating inflammatory mediator TNFa on the granulomatous reaction, mice of different tribes got infected by schistosoma-eggs and thereafter tissue-specimen of them were compared. Examinations were done on NMRI-, BL/6- and Knockout-mice deficient for the TNF-binding receptor TNFRp55. K.O-mice showed decreased numbers of granulomas and the internal structure of these granulomas was lacking the typical structure observed in wild-type BL/6-mice, thus demonstrating the important role of TNFa in the process of granuloma formation.
