Atherosclerosis and cardiac ischemia are inflammatory diseases with both local vascular and systemic components. Locally released Interleukin-6 is the main inducer of the hepatic synthesis of CRP. The plasma level of CRP is an independent predictor of the risk of major cardiac events. When monocytes adhere to the IFN-activated endothelium of atherosclerotic lesions, binding of monocyte VLA-4 to endothelial VCAM-1 may induce NF-kappaB activation with expression and release of Interleukin-1beta by monocytes. This, in turn, could induce systemic inflammatory responses by stimulating the release of Interleukin-6 from the endothelium.
