For the development of multi-functional large space structures, layer composites were constructed and investigated. These can be used as solar sails for for the propulsion system as well as for the communication system with applications in the X-band. After a wet-chemical surface modification, the polyimide was painted with copper. Afterwards the layer was electrochemically reinforced. Within the scope of this work, different mechanical and electrical properties were investigated, which allowed initial predictions of the behaviour of these structures. Surface modification by treatment in a single-molar solution of sodium hydroxide proved to be an effective way to increase the surface free energy of the basic substrate. Thus, the adhesion between the materials was increased. In this way, both adhesive strength and flexural strength were improved. In addition to the thermal environmental conditions, mechanical influences also manifested to be decisive for the efficiency of the structures. By using shadow masks, initial tests were carried out to structure the surface in the form of planar waveguides. The lower production limit of the developed process was about 150 μm. Disadvantages were the low reproducibility due to the turbulent painting and the formation of microscopic holes at film thicknesses in the lower single-digit micrometer range. Advantages, on the other hand, resulted from the comparatively uncomplicated implementation without special technical effort. Finally, a waveguide was manufactured which could be integrated into the support structures of the solar sail. This could simultaneously reduce the mass of the spacecraft.
