For applications like surveillance or cargo transport, unmanned fixed-wing aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capability are preferred over multirotor drones because they offer higher ranges, flight times and speeds. Thus, eleven fully electric representatives of this hybrid aircraft type are compared for performance and cost using a multidisciplinary conceptual aircraft design and optimization tool chain. Further, solutions for aircraft type specific issues like low drag stopped rotor storage and hybrid battery architectures are proposed and evaluated.
