Abstract:
A number of physical systems have been observed to contain Lagrangian structures at large scales resisting (diffusive) transport or mixing. In this cumulative dissertation, we describe progress made in some papers towards the question of characterization and efficient computation of Lagrangian coherent structures. This involves the analysis of connections between different methods in the literature for the computation of Lagrangian coherent structures from the viewpoint of the advection-diffusion equation.

In einer großen Anzahl von physikalischen Systemen werden Lagrang’sche Strukturen beobachtet, die auf großen Skalen (diffusivem) Transport oder (diffusiver) Mischung widerstehen. In dieser kumulativen Dissertation, wird Fortschritt aus verschiedenen Arbeiten zur Frage der Charakterisierung und effizienten Berechnung dieser Strukturen beschrieben. Verbindungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Methoden aus der Literatur werden im Zusammenhang der Advektions-Diffusions-Gleichung untersucht.
