The electronic predistortion (EPD) technique is explained and its use for the compensation of chromatic dispersion, fiber nonlinearities and polarization mode dispersion on fiberoptic links is analyzed. The performance of EPD for long haul transmission is evaluated and compared to optically dispersion managed systems for various target modulation formats. Furthermore, an analysis of the complexity of signal processing for EPD and the D/A converter requirements is presented. Finally, this work also proposes an efficient simulation by using graphics processing units (GPU).

Translated abstract:
