This study investigates the impact of sector coupling and flexibility on the German energy system. For this purpose, the optimization model IMAKUS was further developed, so that a coupling with the heat sector with simultaneously coordinated, intertemporal power plant expansion and demand flexibilization through the use of demand-side management is possible. For flexible and strongly coupled systems, the scenario variation shows a significantly increased usability and thus valorization of renewable electricity. Likewise, the fossil primary energy input and consequently the emissions decrease significantly.
