The optimization of the piston assembly friction requires a high degree of system understanding. Based on measurements on a single-cylinder research engine, a contribution is made to increase system understanding of the tribological relationships of the piston group in modern passenger car applications. For this purpose, selected constructive influencing parameters are varied and the basic causal relationships are analyzed. Since the measured friction force curves are difficult to interpret due to the complex boundary conditions, the analysis is supported by calculations.
