Abstract:
Potential effects of feeding genetically modified maize (MON810) have thoroughly been investigated in several short-term studies. However, no long-term studies have been accomplished so far. Therefore, 36 lactating Fleckvieh cows were separated into two groups (18 cows each) and fed on rations containing either genetically modified maize (MON810) or the non-transgenic counterpart. Aim of this study was to investigate potential long-term effects of feeding MON810 on feed intake, milk yield, metabolism and animal health. Furthermore, highly sensitive detection methods were developed and validated according to the EU commission decision 2002/657/EC to analyse the metabolism of cry1Ab-DNA and Cry1Ab-protein. An effect of MON810 on the metabolism, animal health and fertility was not observed. A transfer of recombinant DNA and the Cry1Ab-protein during the metabolism of the cow was not detected. This is underlined by the founding that the Cry1Ab-protein is underlying a faster degradation in the gastrointestinal tract of the cow in comparison to other proteins. One main emphasis was put on milk analysis. Neither the recombinant DNA, nor the CryAb-protein were detected in whole milk, considering milk from cows fed genetically modified maize is not different to milk cows fed non-transgenic maize.
