In strong contrast to third world countries, the prevalence of allergic diseases continues to rise in industrialized countries. According to the modified ‘Hygiene Hypothesis’ helminths play a major role in suppressing bystander immune responses to allergens. Interestingly, besides the allergen-preventing effect within the host, schistosomiasis during pregnancy protects the offspring from the onset of allergies. The in utero exposure to maternal Schistosomiasis epigenetically reprograms T cell differentiation capacity.
