- A whole-tree 13C labeling experiment was conducted on mature Norway spruce trees in parallel with controlled watering after five years of repeated summer drought. The fate of newly assimilated carbon to growth and CO2 efflux was tracked along branches, stems, coarse- and fine-roots, ectomycorrhizae (ECM) and root exudates to soil CO2 efflux after drought release.
