The implementation of new processes, methods or tools in R&D departments is still a big challenge: management and employees are often resistant to changes or do not accept or apply new implementations. In this study, 48 implementation case studies of were surveyed and the results were clustered according to a psychological framework of motivated behaviour. The results show that 1) implementation challenges are quite similar for innovation processes and business processes; 2) there are some differences regarding challenges with implementing processes, methods or tools; 3) main leverages for successful implementation are the provision of direction (vision), the facilitation of action (availability of role models, clear roles, participation of employees), and the creation of stability (sound communication, piloting, availability of resources, monitoring). The results will be further validated in qualitative and quantitative studies.
