In patients with acute cerebral ischemia, levels of CD133+ progenitor cells (PCs), which might contribute to the regeneration of ischemic tissue after cerebral infarction, and their association with postischemic inflammatory reaction as well as with preexisting statin therapy were analyzed. Levels of CD133+ PCs showed a maximum on day 5 after the ischemic event. No correlation between CD133+ PCs and markers of inflammatory reaction could be found. The increase of the CD133+ PCs showed a correlation to preexisting statin therapy.
