Ragweed is an environmentally relevant neo-allergen in Europe. Using a murine sensitization model, the allergenic potential of ragweed pollen grown under elevated ozone levels was analyzed. Furthermore, in a physiological sensitization model via the nasal mucosa the sensitizing properties of total ragweed pollen extract, its protein-free fraction, and of the major allergen Amb a 1 were evaluated. Moreover, adenosine, a low-molecular weight substance contained in high amounts in the protein-fee fraction of ragweed pollen extract, was investigated for its role in sensitization.
