Using bibliometrics for mapping research collaboration

This presentation addresses the use of bibliometric analyses of author addresses retrieved from journal articles for the purpose of studying research collaboration between universities and/or countries. One issue to approach is why are these analyses commissioned and performed, that is: who are commissioning these analyses and what are they using them for? Another issue is the methodological issues, that is, how are they done? In relation to best practice for bibliometrics, one important aspect to discuss is how to deal with ‘mega-authored’ articles. Therefore, the focus of the presentation will be on how different methodological choices will give different results, and to discuss to what extent different results can be interpreted as actual collaboration between e.g. two specific universities. In relation to this, there presentation will also discuss to what extent we have the same opportunity to make these methodological choices if we download the data and make the analyses ourselves or if we use commercial products for bibliometric analyses such as InCites or SciVal.     «
