For evaluation of local tumor control following radiation therapy of surgically treated
breast cancer patients, 1304 patients observed between 2000 and 2005 were
retrospectivly included in the present study.
1119 received breast conserving therapy (BCT), 185 patients underwent mastectomy.
In 376 patients an oncoplastic reconstruction directly followed the BCT or abladation, while 928 did not.
In the BCT-group, a local recurrence developed in 3,0% following intraglandular flap
versus 5,3% without reconstruction (p=0,096).
Subsequent to reduction mastectomy, the risk of recurrence was slightly lower with
1/40 cases, than among alternative reconstructive methods after mastectomy 3/27.
Patients under 40 years of age had a significantly higher risk of recurrence upon
completion of both the complete survey period (p=0,005) and 5-year-analysis
(p=0,06). The same applied to triple-negatives with 11,2% in the univariant analysis (p=0,00).
The results of the present study are comparable to those found in the literature.
Predominance of a specific surgical method could not be proven.
