Former studies indicated an association between fertility disorders in men and atopy (allergic rhinitis, asthma bronchiale, atopic eczema, elevated total IgE, detectable specific IgE antibodies). Detailed studies have been hitherto lacking. In the present study 908 men with unfulfilled desire for children were examined for atopic diseases. In addition to the routine andrological work up, total IgE levels and specific serum IgE antibodies were measured, allergy history was taken and the patients underwent a dermatologic examination.
Atopic and non-atopic patients showed no significant difference concerning ejaculate parameters or sex hormones. However, certain forms of atopy were associated with lower testicular volume, cryptorchidism and raised FSH and prolactin levels. The causes are unexplained; environmental factors are hypothesized.
