The aim of this double-blind randomized controlled study was to examine whether a verbal suggestion could increase the effect of pharmaceutically subdosed nitroglycerin on the diameter of coronary arteries. Therefore 0,01 mg nitroglycerin was administered i.c. to 30 patients during coronary angiography. The intervention group received a verbal suggestion, implying coronary vasodilatation and the control group remained without suggestion. Primary endpoints were the changes in Percentage Diameter Stenosis (% DS), Minimal Lumen Diameter (MLD) and Reference Diameter (RD) of the index coronary segment before and 60 seconds after the administration of nitroglycerin. Furthermore, changes in hemodynamics, psychological distress, and chest pain perception were defined as secondary endpoints. The results of this study showed no suggestion specific significant effects on the diameter of the coronary arteries or on other recorded parameters.
