This present study represents a basic research approachment in the field of cardiac molecular imaging. We studied the sodium iodide symporter, which is a known protein of the thyroid, towards its usage as a cardiac reporter gene. With a reporter gene you are able to detect effects on a molecular level non invasively. In this case we studied the feasibility to image signal strength and duration with a clinical gamma camera. The results suggest that the sodium iodide symporter gene suits very well as a cardiac reporter gene and is convenient, because the necessary scanners and radionuclides are widely available and relatively cheap.
