A critical requirement for enhanced patient participation in medical decision making (shared decision making, SDM) is profound knowledge of the determinants of patients' participation needs. Participation preferences in n=203 patients with either schizophrenia or multiple sclerosis can be predicted to a considerable degree by their level of education and their concerns about medication. Additionally, treatment satisfaction and self-assessed decison making skills have an impact in patients with schizophrenia. Implications for SDM-implementation are discussed.
