In this study 12 patients with contact allergy to formaldehyde were exposed to both, a car interior’s typical mixture of volatile organic compounds [VOC] and filtered air, every time for a period of 4 hours. Consequently, a patch test was applied to each patient’s back. We investigated VOC’s influence on allergic reactivity in patch test, on skin barrier and on respiratory function. Results tend towards aggravated response in patch test, towards increased damage to skin barrier function and towards increased skin blood flow but are not statistically significant. No impact on respiratory tract was found.
