The Quality Standard for Rapeseed Oil as a Fuel (RK-Qualitätsstndard) 05/2000 was developed by the LTV-working group. This quality standard should help to guarantee a reliable operation of vegetable oil engines. The quality of rapeseed oil as a fuel is a compilation of important properties. This properties are influenced by rapeseed variety, growing parameters, storage, etc.
The aim of this project is the research in the influence of variety as well as the influence of rapeseed quality and hulled rapeseed on the properties of the produced rapeseed oil as a fuel.
In order to get results of the influence of variety on the oil properties several sorts of rape were chosen for oil expression: Express, Talent, Viking, Artus, Titan, Elan, Dorothy, Heros, Mozart, Senator and a high oleic sort called Nex160.
Further in the project, to get information about the influence from rapeseed quality and hulled rapeseed to oil properties, rape of the variety Talent was expressed. The rape was cleaned and afterwards merged with broken grains, rapeseed extrinsic components from harvesting, sprouted grains and hulled grains in the following proportions: Broken grains: 1 %, 4 % and 9 %; extrinsic components: 1 %, 2 % and 4 %; sprouted grains: 5 %, 10 % and 15 %; hulled grains: 33 %, 66 % and 100 %.
The oil expression was operated at the Technologie- und Förderzentrum (TFZ) in Freising with a small scale oil mill called Komet DD 85 G (IBG Monforts Oecotec).
The production of the oil was preceded by cold pressed expression.
The produced oils were refined with a standard filtration method so that the contamination was below 25 mg/kg.
Afterwards the following properties of rapeseed oil were analysed:
Research with different variety:
Fatty acid proportions, iodine number, contamination, oxidation stability, acid value, water content, carbon residue, ash content, phosphorus content, sulphur content, calcium content and magnesium content.
Research with different rapeseed quality and hulled grains:
Acid value, oxidation stability, phosphorus content, calcium and magnesium content.
The limiting values of the Quality Standard for Rapeseed Oil as a Fuel 05/2000 were mostly observed.
The variety Nex160 had a lower iodine number and a higher oxidation stability than the others. There are less differences in the other properties.
There is an influence of broken grains and hulled grains on the acid value, oxidation stability, phosphorus and calcium content. This couldn’t be shown for sprouted grains and extrinsic component from harvesting.
