In patients with early stage HCC, liver transplantation presents a curative treatment option. Due to organ shortage there are long waiting times. In order to halt tumour growth during waiting time, bridging therapies are used. In a retrospective trial with 27 patients who received either TACE or SBRT alone, or a combination of TACE and SBRT, explant histopathology was analysed. Strikingly, in almost all patients in the combination group, no residual tumour tissue was detected by histopathology, whereas TACE or SBRT alone resulted in significantly lower rates of complete response.
