In order to determine the predictive value of food allergies and filaggrin mutations in early onset atopic dermatitis for persistent eczema and subsequent asthma, 65 children with early onset atopic dermatitis (38 of whom had food allergy) were prospectively examined.
In this cohort, filaggrin mutations did not prove to be a reliable predictive factor for later asthma, an evident food allergy however was.
Persistence of eczema could not be reliably predicted by either the filaggrin status or the presence of food allergies alone, though the combination of both traits considerably increased the risk.
