The study investigates G-DRG based reimbursements for inpatient treatment of newborns, children and adolescents in four different hospitals of maximum care. Relevant factors influencing adequate financial compensation were: high number of infants below age of one, emergency cases, inter-hospital transfer of patients, orphan diseases, low quality of data on cost or complex procedures, and insufficient coding quality of multimorbid patients.
Implications on the adequacy of financial reimbursements, cost effectiveness and economics are discussed.
