In this work, the mobilization of progenitor cells after myocardial infarction was investigated. Serial blood samples were taken and the number of CD133+CD45- progenitor cells was measured. The systemic inflammatory reaction was characterized by measuring plasma cytokine concentrations. A rise in plasma IL-8 and VEGF on day 1 and 2 was shown which was followed by an elevated number of circulating progenitor cells. The number of circulating progenitors was associated with IL-8 plasma concentrations. Thus, the inflammatory reaction following myocardial infarction may contribute to myocardial regeneration by mobilization of progenitor cells.
