The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the correlation between epidural analgesia and the rates of episiotomy as well as other childbirth parameters. An evaluation was made of patient’s labour and delivery records covering a one-year period from the Dr. Geisenhofer GmbH clinic, Munich. This study’s inclusion criteria were met by 424 primiparous women, of whom 294 had received epidural analgesia. Regarding the rates of episiotomy there was no significant difference between the epidural analgesia group and the control group (n=130). However, there were significant differences between the two groups in the incidence of oxytocin administration and the duration of expulsion as well as in the weight and the head circumference of newborns.
