Abstract:
The work aimed at contributing to a deeper understanding of the properties of soil organic matter (SOM) in permafrost-affected soils in the Arctic and Antarctica that face major changes due to global warming. It was demonstrated that the SOM in carbon-rich Arctic soils is dominated by labile SOM fractions that are assumably prone to mineralization after thawing. The scarce vegetation on soils in maritime Antarctica determines the buildup and accumulation of SOM, with the availability of freshwater being a decisive factor linking formation of biological soil crusts and soils.
