Hydrogenotrophic denitrifying bacteria, enriched in hydrogen-treated microcosms filled with nitrate polluted aquifer material, were determined through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Only a small community was observed, thus prevailing taxa could be isolated and characterised. Dechloromonas denitrificans, Ferribacterium limneticum, and Hydrogenophaga taeniospiralis were all completely reducing nitrate to nitrogen gas; however, they differed largely in the transient accumulation of nitrite, which could be attributed to the nitrate reductase type.
