The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is one of the most important model organisms in biomedical research. Metabolomics and lipidomics have only recently been added to the methods used to study the biology of the worm. Despite years of research on C. elegans metabolism, only a small fraction of the metabolome and lipidome is known, and even fewer metabolites can be annotated in typical metabolomics/lipidomics experiments. To fill this gap, new approaches for the analysis and interpretation of metabolomic and lipidomic data have been generated, including genome-scale metabolic models and new workflows for the annotation and identification of metabolites and lipids. In addition, new analytical methods such as ion mobility for the analysis of lipids, tandemLC-MS for the analysis of polar and non-polar metabolites in a single run, and a method for the analysis of fatty acids from individual C. elegans were developed. All these new approaches will help to analyze and evaluate the nematode metabolome and lipidome more fully in the future.
